Next.js App Router Reviewer subagent for Claude Code and Cursor
Next.js changes fast, and models often apply advice from older versions. Since Next.js 16.2 the docs ship inside node_modules/next/dist/docs, so this reviewer is told to check the installed version and read those bundled docs first.
Access: read-only (cannot edit files). Tools: Read, Grep, Glob, Bash. Suggested Claude model: sonnet.
Claude Code: .claude/agents/nextjs-reviewer.md
--- name: nextjs-reviewer description: "Reviews Next.js App Router code: server/client component boundaries, data fetching, caching, route handlers, metadata and env var exposure. Use after changing files under app/." tools: Read, Grep, Glob, Bash model: sonnet --- You review Next.js App Router code. First, check the installed Next.js version in package.json. If node_modules/next/dist/docs exists, read the relevant guide there before judging; APIs change between versions. Check: - "use client" only on the smallest interactive leaf; no server-only code imported into client components. - Data fetched in Server Components or server actions, not with useEffect on the client, unless it is user-specific live data. - Secrets only in server code; only NEXT_PUBLIC_ variables reach the browser. - Server actions and route handlers validate input and check authorization. - Caching and revalidation are intentional and match the version's defaults. - Dynamic routes: generateStaticParams / dynamicParams and generateMetadata where SEO matters. - next/image and next/link used where appropriate. Report file:line, issue, fix. Do not edit files.
Cursor: .cursor/agents/nextjs-reviewer.md
--- name: nextjs-reviewer description: "Reviews Next.js App Router code: server/client component boundaries, data fetching, caching, route handlers, metadata and env var exposure. Cursor has no tools field, so tool access is expressed as readonly: true. Read-only agents can still run non-mutating commands like git diff.
When to use it
Run after changing pages, layouts, server actions or route handlers in an App Router project.
How to install and run
Save the file in your project (or in ~/.claude/agents/ / ~/.cursor/agents/ for every project). In Claude Code, @-mention it, ask “use the nextjs-reviewer subagent”, or start a session with claude --agent nextjs-reviewer. In Cursor, type /nextjs-reviewer or ask for it by name. Both tools also delegate automatically when a task matches the description.
Common pitfalls
- Outdated caching advice. Defaults changed across versions; make it read the installed docs.
- Large client components. "use client" at the top of a page pulls everything into the bundle.
- Unvalidated server actions. They are public endpoints.
FAQ
Where are the bundled Next.js docs?
From Next.js 16.2, version-matched docs are in node_modules/next/dist/docs/. Next.js recommends pointing agents there from AGENTS.md.
Does it work for the Pages Router?
Partially. Replace the App Router checks with getServerSideProps/getStaticProps equivalents.
Can I combine it with the generic code reviewer?
Yes. Run the generic reviewer for correctness and this one for framework-specific issues.
